Survey Question # 11

Rationale:

This question is directly related to previous Survey Question # 10. The Union strongly believes that one of the management’s responsibility is to ensure that every ICU nurse is provided with training and support to grow his/her practice and to keep his/her knowledge and skills at the highest possible level to ensure top performance of our ICU Unit. Therefore the Union has included the following question in Survey:

If in the past 2 (two) years you were told by our management that you are not competent or not skilled enough to provide breaks to other nurses or to perform in a role of Action Team nurse, did management offer you any training that will improve your skills or make you competent to perform in Break Relief and Action Team Roles?

The rationale for this question is two-pronged: (1) if we have such unqualified nurses as suggested by the opponents of fair distribution of Break Relief and Action Team assignments, the management, in order to be in compliance with Kaiser Policy, must at minimum provide the appropriate educational and growth opportunities to such nurses, and (2) the extent to which such opportunities were provided will prove or disprove management’s suggestion that about 80% of our ICU nurses are unqualified to handle Break Relief and/or Action Team assignments.

Statistical Analysis: The survey results clearly demonstrate that our ICU management has offered skills-enhancing training to between 0.77% and 4.63% of our ICU nurses. These findings were calculated by using scientific formula at the highest possible 99% confidence level, with a margin of error of 1.93% and a p-score of 0.027.

Conclusion: This result provides strong evidence that only few of our ICU nurses who were told by management that they need to enhance their skills, have been offered educational and professional growth opportunities by our management. In addition, this result scientifically debunks the suggestion that about 80% of our ICU nurses are unqualified to handle Break Relief and Action Team assignments.
