All comments in response to Question are left unedited, just like they were typed in response to the Survey Question # 9 below.

Do you agree that among the other things, to be a competent ICU nurse also means to have knowledge, skills and ability to manage and effectively perform in rapidly changing situations ?

All responders (100% of the survey responders) have answered this question by stating:

“Yes, I agree. The ICU competence includes the knowledge, skills and ability to manage and effectively handle rapidly changing situations.”. In addition, 8 (eight) of Survey responders left the following comments:

  • Though it is a requirement of us and a skill expected it is not one that all nurses are competent in.

  • Knowledge and skills are one part. But adapting to rapidly changing situation is also important but not always necessary. I believe learning and giving opportunities to the staff will lead to a more fruitful relationship in the future.

  • Not all nurses have the same training and exposure to gain experience that others may have. CRRT for example. Not everybody has taken the training. For those who have, not everybody has had enough experience managing these patients.

  • But managing 1 or 2 rapidly changing situations maybe all some nurses can do, support nurses needs to be able to manage that and help another 3 or 4 nurses too.

  • Even with good theoretical knowledge if the real patient exposure is low absolutely it affects the quality of care.

  • Yes. But everyone learns in a different icu and has a different strength. We need to let them excel where they are.

  • It is critical that nurses who are break nurses also excel in many things . Competent is different than being excel . They can do their job competently but they can not do the other duties and responsibilities to assist nurses, lack of team work and be an advocate all the way – which now a days a lot to do.
