ICU Survey Results

The purpose of this survey is to assist the Union in establishing Fair and Healthy Working Environment for all of our ICU Nurses, and to set the stage for achieving spectacular outcomes for our Patients.

The QR Code for the survey was posted in the ICU Break room. Survey was open to all nurses for approximately month and a half, and nurses were encouraged to participate. At one point the Union has received an allegation that some nurses were discouraged from participation. However, despite the alleged discouragement, the vast majority of our ICU nurses have demonstrated tremendous interest, and completed this survey. Because 4 nurses have responded twice, their initial answers (duplicates) were removed.

In total, 111 out of approximately 150¹ of our ICU nurses have completed this survey. Out of 150 nurses 5 (five) nurses were excluded from a total count of because they have indicated that they have no opinion regarding any of the Survey questions, and are neutral on the issues raised by the Survey. The total count was reduced to 145 nurses accordingly. The Statistical Analysis for responses to each question was thoroughly calculated and presented. The Survey Questions 1-3 and Questions 22 and 23 are asking for responder’s personal information which will be kept in Confidentiality as it was guaranteed to prevent any discrimination, retaliation, and/or bullying. The personal information was collected to ensure the integrity of the Survey. Below are the rest of the Survey questions and inquiries. It should be noted that per responses to Question # 3, the Median for ICU Experience of our ICU nurses is 17 years, which is significantly higher of the Nationwide Median of 8 years. This means that comparing to Nationwide median for ICU units’ experience, our ICU nursing force is significantly more experienced.

• Do you consider yourself to be skillful and competent enough to relieve other ICU nurses for Breaks?

• Are you willing to occasionally perform in a Break Relief RN role based on rotation schedule for this assignment?

• If you are not willing to perform in a Break Relief RN role, please place your name on the list of nurses who opted out of being assigned to perform in a role of Break Relief Nurse. After the aggregate data of this Confidential survey is published, the “Opt Out” list will be posted on the CNA’s Bulletin Board located in our Break Room. Please indicate below if you will place your name on the “Opt Out” list yourself, or if you want the Union to do it for you.

• Do you agree that a workload for every shift should be equally and fairly distributed among all ICU Nurses?

• Do you agree that every ICU RN must be competent to practice in ICU environment?

• Do you agree that among the other things, to be a competent ICU nurse also means to have knowledge, skills and ability to manage and effectively perform in rapidly changing situations?

• In the past 2 (two) years, have you ever been told by our ICU management and/or by another nurse that your skills are not good enough to relieve other nurses for Breaks and/or to handle rapidly changing situations in a role of Action Team RN?

• If in the past 2 (two) years you were told by our management that you are not competent or not skilled enough to provide breaks to other nurses or to perform in a role of Action Team nurse, did management offer you any training that will improve your skills or make you competent to perform in Break Relief and Action Team Roles?

• Would you like to have regular and meaningful “Skill Days” and regular “Hands On” training sessions for all nurses (as we had before COVID) to keep your knowledge and practical skills up to date to ensure top performance of our Unit?

• Are you aware of the fact that the Action Team RN assignment is being currently rotated among nearly all ICU Nurses at the Kaiser Roseville Medical Center, and at the Kaiser South Sacramento Medical Center?

• Are you aware of the fact that by rotating the Action Team RN assignment among nearly all ICU nurses, the ICU nurses at the Kaiser South Sacramento Medical Center have achieved spectacular patient outcomes greatly contributing to their hospital becoming the first hospital in the entire World achieving the Magnet Recognition Award with Distinction on their first try in December of 2023?

• In your professional opinion, should every ICU nurse be given an opportunity to learn the Action Team workflow and to perform in a role of Action Team RN?

• Are you a member of our Action Team?

• If you are not a member of our Action Team, would you like to become one?

• Some employees claim that other ICU nurses should not be provided with an opportunity to learn the Action Team workflow and to periodically perform in a role of Action Team RN because only our current Action Team RNs have a  “special” working relationship with doctors that other nurses don’t have. In your professional opinion, if that claim is true, is it fair to deprive other ICU nurses of the opportunity to learn and to periodically perform in a role of Action Team RN based on such claim?

• In your professional opinion, in general, is it OK for any doctor from any hospital located in the United States to practice favoritism in any hospital environment including our ICU?

• If you are a Member of our Action Team and have 2 (two) or more scheduled ATRN days, are you willing to give up at least one of your scheduled days to other member(s) of our current Action Team who have no scheduled ATRN days?

• If you are a Member of our Action Team, do you have any objection to providing an opportunity to other nurses to learn applicable workflow and periodically perform in a role of Action Team RN?

1. Total number of nurses employed in our ICU fluctuates between 140 and 150. Currently, as of June 1st of 2025, we have 148 nurses employed in our ICU, but for the purposes of this survey we are using the highest Number of 150 to ensure the survey’s validity and reliability. ↩︎
