Survey Question # 10

Rationale:

To test the validity of previously mentioned claim that only a small group of our ICU nurses (about 20%) possess “merit and capability” and are “skilful” enough to perform in a role Break Relief RN basically suggesting that vast majority of our ICU nurses (about 80%) nurses are unqualified to perform in roles of Break Relief and Action Team RN, the Union has also asked the following survey question:

In the past 2 (two) years, have you ever been told by our ICU management and/or by another nurse that your skills are not good enough to relieve other nurses for Breaks and/or to handle rapidly changing situations in a role of Action Team RN ?

The purpose of this survey question is to determine if any of our nurses have actually been told that he or she is unqualified to perform in Break Relief and/or Action Team roles. If no one including management told a nurse (who worked in our ICU for years) that he or she is unqualified for BR and/or AT assignments, it means one of two things, ether: (1) a nurse is qualified and the opponents of fair distribution of BR and AT assignments are wrong, or (2) the management team is not doing its job of identifying and providing educational opportunities to such nurses for the purposes of building qualified and versatile nursing force to practice in our ICU.

Statistical Analysis: The survey results demonstrate that only few nurses, between 1.39% and 5.81% of our ICU nurses were told by our management and/or by another nurse that his or her skill set is not good enough to provide Breaks to other nurses and/or to handle rapidly changing situations in a role of Action Team RN. Reliability of this result is unassailable given the high accuracy 99% confidence level, with a narrow margin of error of 2.21% and a p-score of only 0.036.

Conclusion: This result provides strong evidence that either, (1) overwhelming majority of our ICU nurses have unquestioned qualifications and capability to handle Break Relief and/or Action Team assignments, or (2) that the members of our ICU management team have totally failed to do their job.

Are the opponents of fair distribution of Break Relief and Action Team assignments suggesting that the members of our management team have totally failed to do their job?
